Okay, I have a dilemma, and I figure that the more theatrically minded of my friends might be able to help out.

An international group are doing Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" on the 4th and 5th of April. A Tom Stoppard version of the play. linkAnother group who toured Australia are doing "My Fair Lady" from the 25th of March to the 12th of April ( Read more... )

I recommend Checkhov and reading the reviews of the MFL production before deciding about it.

There will probably be other opportunities to see My Fair Lady in the future - it's a pretty common play - so if you're worried about money and have to cut one of these things out, I'd skip that one.

I know absolutely nothing about the Chekhov, though.

The Chekhov play is moderately common, too, but the Stoppard version is less so.

That I didn't know! In fact, until I read the booking info, I didn't know Stoppard had a version of Chekhov, either.

I would see the paintings as opposed to either of the shows, but that's not really one of your choices . . .

How much do you like My Fair Lady? Given the choice between the two, I would probably see The Cherry Orchard (though I'm suddenly wondering if I've ever seen My Fair Lady live. I've been in it, but I might not have seen it) especially since I just read the hilarious bit in The Fifth Elephant spoofing it. Pratchett spoofing Chekhov is a good time.

Pratchett spoofed Chekhov? This I've got to read. I suppose I ought to read the Chekhov either before or after.
One of my reasons for the Chekhov is Madeleine L'Engle mentions it in more than one book, if I recall correctly.

Remember we're talking cultural backwater NZ, not places that always have shows. It is unlikely that I'll find three things in a year I want to do, let alone three things in three months.

I quite like My Fair Lady, but ... for some reason I'm less sure about it than the others.

It's a very short spoof, but it's funny. And it's definitely of The Cherry Orchard, with a brief nod to Uncle Vanya.

If you're less sure about My Fair Lady, do the Chekhov and the Impressionists! That totally sounds like a pair of good times.

My two cents: I would go to the Impressionists and skip the plays, unless you particularly want to see these companies do them. Or unless you already know you like My Fair Lady or Tom Stoppard a whole lot ( ... )

Only in the way of my best friend wants me to go visit her in London/Kent in August next year, and if I go that far, I should go to the Netherlands too, and if I'm that far away from home, I might as well try and stop off in the US either coming or going.

I doubt I'd stay away from Massachusetts forever. I like the people, and I like the places.
