Finding a decent Naruto fanfic is surprisingly difficult. Oddly, it's not because the quality of the writing is lower than in other fandoms (relatively speaking), but because of some very basic problems with the Naruto setting...

I think there are one or two FICS that cover some of these points, but you're quite right; he has been sabotaged for most of his life just due to the fact that oh hey, his parents sealed a monster in him and didn't bother to explain anything about previous hosts (his mother being the prior one, no less - I'm assuming that if you're reading fic you don't mind spoilers), much less about what the situation was with how the kyuubi was pulled from Kushina (not her fault).

anyway, vis a vis is a decent fic; I'd have to dig through my bookmarks for others.

Oh, I stopped reading Naruto some time ago, so no worries on the spoilers front... although clearly I've missed some things, since I had no idea Kyuubi had a previous host at all.

Yeah, his mother right before him (evidently the Whirlpool leading family, Uzumaki, was related to Tsunade's family, Senju, albeit distantly, and their specialty was sealing, so take that as you will) and prior to that, an unnamed woman.

But yeah, fail all 'round on raising a hero of the village.
