I'm torn between 1300/Spain or 1200/Italy. How you describe the interior of your ideal home sounds much more how I'd imagine Volterra by the time Alec and Jane arrive so I'm going to go with 1200/Italy :)

I'm thinking 1600 Spain. It's mostly warm and peaceful. It's in Europe and you could have a house like you described near the sea. It's ancient and your free day activites fit in well there.
