I think it's a brilliant idea. As for costs, I know self-publishing has become easier these days. I could check with some of my author pals.
As for financing, I have been using Kickstarter to support a lot of my musician pals for indie projects... I don't see why something like this couldn't be just as useful using that service. Plus folks willing to kick in $30 towards it would already be pre-purchasing it more or less. Just a thought.
I did actually think about Kickstarter, but I think the cash outlay for a book like this might be anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000, and I really doubt I could raise that much on Kickstarter.
Good point. Possibly Kiva? I don't know. But perhaps a small publisher would be interested in the pitch? I think if you got those writers signed on one of them would be bound to have a good resource to tap getting it off the ground.
Regardless, it's still a great idea and I'd love to have it on my coffee table all the same.
I think with an anthology like this you'd have to have the publisher first, and I'm dubious that most small press publishers would be willing to invest this much into it.
But I put the idea out there. Let's see if anyone responds to it. I, too, would love to have it on my table. Alan Moore writing about the Carceri...I'd pay a lot for that.

But, yeah, the Lambshead model would be a good one to follow.
