Vet care, do they need it?
A check up is always nice since they don't always show signs of illness.

What kind of cages do you guys have/would recommend?

Oh and pine & cedar bedding is NOT GOOD for rats. The aromatic oils can make them very sick and/or die.

Do they actually go in the litter box? Thanks for all the info!

for vet care: a regular vet check is always nice. Not everyone (including myself) does this, but provides vet care when needed.

as for all your other questions you can find the answers all on the link below along within the additional links provided in the "websites" section :D

Regular vet visits/shots are not necessary, but they're very prone to respiratory illness and cancer. Getting your females spayed can help reduce the risk of cancer later in life. Make sure you have a reliable vet, as when rats get sick they often hide their illnesses and prompt attention is important. A lot of people don't see rats, and more will without knowing what they're doing. There are recommended vets lists on the RFC, and if you post your area someone might have a personal rec ( ... )

They absolutely need vet care. There is debate over whether or not rats are carriers of the Mycoplasmosis virus, but regardless, they get Myco which needs antibiotics to treat; females can get pyometra and/or mammory tumors which is why it's recommended they be spayed ( ... )
