Let's talk about Enid Pettigrew. "Er...who?" you may well ask. One of the new "extras" you can find on JKR's website is a sheet of notes mainly concerning teachers and subjects during Harry's third year. These notes were from when she was writing PoA. At least, that's what it looks like. Probably from a very early draft.

I think the reason Peter gets such sort shrift in fandom is because he committed the greatest sin a character can commit: He was ugly in the films.

Lmao. You have a serious point, though. Not only was he ugly in the films (I'm probably going to upset quite a few people here, but I didn't really think Gary Oldman or David Thewlis looked that great in them, either), but, more crucially in my opinion, he was ugly in the books. Pudgy and balding... not my dream man, I have to say. There's nothing romantic about either of those things in the same way there is with Sirius' wasted good looks and Remus' prematurely greying hair. Even Snape, for all his greasiness, is described more favourably: he is slim, has a silky voice, dark eyes and moves with grace. We are never shown what sort of a man Peter can be in company which respects him, either, which makes it even harder to imagine him as the perfect romantic hero ( ... )
