Devin and Shannon were gone. Daddy came in and took their bodies. He told us not to leave our room. No one could leave the room. He said he'd kill us if we did, and I believed him. He had that look in his eyes, and I knew he meant it.
Corey never listened to Daddy. She always tried to do the opposite of what he said. As soon as he was gone, Corey left the room. I tried to stop her. Brooke and Aubrie hid under the bed. Corey wouldn't listen to me any more than she listened to Daddy.
That night, I heard her screaming. I held the boys as tight as I could, the three of us huddled against the wall. I'd never heard sounds like that. Like...Like a dying animal.
I don't think I slept at all that night, not even when the screaming stopped. Brooke and Aubrie slept. They were asleep when the door opened and Daddy shoved Corey back in the room. It was almost morning, and I could see the dark stains on her legs even in the shadowy darkness.
Corey didn't say anything that whole day. She just lay in the bed with the blankets pulled up to her chin. I tried to keep the boys busy playing silly games on the other side of the room. They seemed oblivious to Corey's presence, almost like they made a pact with each other to just pretend she didn't exist.
We didn't have electricity, so when the sun went down, our room went dark. The boys stayed on the far side of the room. I crawled in the bed with Corey. It was the first chance I had to try to really talk to her, once the boys were snoring.
She wouldn't even look at me.
Maybe she knew he was coming for her again. I tried to stop him. I tried to stand up to him and protect her. His fist collided with my face, my head hit the ground. When I woke up, Aubrie and Brooke were standing over me, poking at me.
"Is she back?"
Aubrie shook his head, his unruly hair falling over his face, making him look like some kind of freakish angel.
