I just finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Crisis on Infinite Hallows, an appropriate title taking into account the immense bodycount in this book.
Okay, it's not exactly immense, but Rowling does seem to take a keen interest in killing off major characters. ("Hedwig! NO!!!", "Fred! NO!!!", "Snape! NO!!!", "Lupin! NO!!!" etc.) At times it seems a bit gratuituous, but not painfully so.
On another note I fucking knew that Dumbledore was in on Snape killing him and I fucking knew that Harry was the last Horcrux! Talk about predictability. One thing that shocked me though was the revelation that Severus Snape was in love with Lily Evans. The first time it was hinted at I expected someone to shout "Don't you get it, Harry, you stupid tit?! Snape's your father, you're the bastard child of the man you hate the most!" but it's good that it never came to that.
On a related note, I loved this book.
