i've been tinkering with stuff like Rosetta Stone and getting books like Japanese for Busy People (kana version). Rosetta works well, but I haven't had much time to use it >.

Ugh, Rosetta stone. Good for vocabulary, awful for grammar.
Other than that... : \
Genki is a good course, but it really helps to have the CDs, and they're ridiculously expensive.

Uh, and since no one wants to pay for what could be free -
The
Guide to Japanese Grammar
is indispensable, and it has links to some other sites for vocab etc.
