By my understanding, the thing with the Friends page is that it's supposed to work the same way both for You and anyone who's checking out your own journal and wants to see what kind of Friends you have. This promotes a "surfing" style of navigation for the site, where people can view you Friends' latest entries, see something interesting, and in turn check out that Friend's lj page, and in turn look at their Friends page, etc.
So, if they added the ability for you to clear our your Friends page listings, you'd be seeing something different than anyone else who accessed the page. That kind of thing is a real headache to maintain.
I personally wouldn't mind something like dA's message center that we could use in place of the Friends page, but I don't think the two will be merged any time soon.
But, hey, if you find a way to offer the suggestion, it can't hurt to try.
Thinking about that I say you are right. LJ has its own logic, and it took me a while to get behind all the small bits and parts, but finally it makes sense and is fun. But it depends of the amount of friends and communities you watch, since the standard search still is a bit off-ish...
