As the moderator of another low volume community, I've found the easiest thing to do is to moderate the entry point. No one can become a member without approval. We put in our Info (you can also top post it) that Membership entry is managed to keep out spambots, so people will understand, it is not because we are snooty, just want to keep things clean. You do have to keep on top of New Members. LJ makes it easy to go to their profile and make sure they are a fan and not a spambot. Then you can approve them for membership. And with that, our group has never had those nasty spam postings show up. And interestingly, we actually have One Real Russian in the group. I had to check that one real careful, but it was legit!
I'll be doing the same thing with my low-volume community as soon as I get the time to sit down and sift through the rest of the current members. (I already set subscription to moderate, but posting is already moderated until said sifting is finished.)
I'll be happy to help you moderate. I already moderate several communities, and have the ability to check LiveJournal during the day.
