random stolen meme

Swiped from tiggymalvern's journal, as I've been attempting to do some catchup reading on my f-list recently. Plus I've gone on a Trigun nostalgia binge since I just bought volume 14 of TriMax, and Tiggy's still one of my fave V/W authors. Even though I had already read the entire manga through scans, actually owning the published set of the entire series just ( Read more... )

Damn. I'm familiar if not well versed in all of those fandoms except Last Exile. I count those few X-Files episodes with you and Erin as my exposure ( ... )

See my comment to Tiggy on Futurama/Farscape. Both have similar group dynamics - in the sense that they're both about groups of misfits who don't fit in anywhere else, with clashing personalities that complement each other nonetheless. Both also have a similar sense of humor and tend to integrate real darkness and depth of storytelling into a seemingly endless stream of jokes, visual gags and absurdism. So I think my love of Fry/Leela is an echo of my love of Crichton/Aeryn ( ... )

Dio/Lucciola and Sokka/Zuko I don't know at all, and Fry/Leela don't seem to quite fit the pattern, but for the others -

They're all very definitely equals who would push and pull in a relationship, nothing one-sided. Sometimes they're equals who can match each other when nobody else can, who can understand their world in a way nobody else can. Sometimes they're equals in very different ways who complement each other by providing what the other lacks. Heck, some of these couples are both of those. And many of these relationships are intense, because extreme circumstances push them into a depth of feeling and separateness from the rest of the world that would probably be unhealthy if they were normal people.

It's interesting how many of them you share with my list XD

Bing: Equality. Jack/Ianto didn't do anything for me until the second series, when Ianto got over some of his guilt-induced bowing and scraping. When he started standing up to Jack, my interest in the ship flared up. And yeah, I like couples who complement each other. Mulder and Scully are just too obvious. :D ( ... )

I didn't see any Ianto/Jack until right at the end of series one. Not as anything beyond the occasional bit of flirting anyway, I don't think the interest was really there on either side at that point. I know people already wrote the pairing in series one, but I think that was just 'put the two pretty guys together' mentality.

I lean towards stories about alienation a lot anyway, regardless of ships. Isolation in the midst of many, people who can't or don't know how to connect with their worlds in a mundane way anymore.

Yep, me too. I think it's a kink for me because that kind of environment justifies an intense depth of relationship and interdependence that would have to be called unhealthy in a normal setting.

I don't know any of these except Dio/Luciola, so here goes.

I think a major theme in this pairing is that neither of them can truly function without the other. Dio needs Luciola to keep him sane, and Luciola needs Dio because otherwise there would be no "Luciola"--he would likely be another Cicada, only serving Delphine. Dio's hyperactivity and randomness is tempered by Luciola's steady personality, which is kept from stagnating by the abovementioned randomness. I've always thought that although they truly cared about each other for a long time, further feelings needed a catalyst to develope--in other words, Claus. I always think of Luciola being jealous of him ^^ But before those feelings could be acted on, the Birthday Party happened, and...well.
