Following a discussion, Pete asked me to post about my first computer. I couldn't bothered to transcribe or edit the conversation into a coherent thread of thought, so here is the unedited infodump. with links.
Ash: could be worse, you could be grooving up staticshadow
petertheta: troo dat
Ash: whose music sounded like a spectrum loading
petertheta: music to kill Greys
Ash: i actually wondered if i could get one of my old amstrad cassettes, record it to mp3 and send it to him as music. see what he'd say
petertheta: *greys play close encounter notes tenderly, and are killed by staticshadow in return*
Ash:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvChkOHgDIoAsh: listen to the sound of my childhood
petertheta: "i noticed a sort of… sonic shadow." - dr fendelman, Image of the Fendahl
petertheta: *click*
Ash: I'm not sure what disturbs me more. the fact someone *captured* this, or the fact i thought to search for it
Ash: actually no, the fact it's had 23,950 views. that's what disturbs me more
petertheta: i taped 15 minutes of a 5 second amiga light and soundshow once :-)
Ash: which fanvid did you use it in?
petertheta: i LOVE this sort of shit ;-)
petertheta: if i have a sudden existence failure, there's a tape in my collection labeled CHANNEL 26 MIND BEND
petertheta: you grew up with 30% better games than me ;-)
Ash: living with an amstrad was like this: you put a tape in, rewound it. typed in the commands to load it
Ash: you then had 3-5mins of SKULLFUCKING WHITE NOISE
Ash: except, because you were a child, it seemed like an hour
petertheta: i didnt know you could load something this slick off a cassette
Ash: and in the last 5 seconds, it would hang. and you'd have to rewind and start again
Ash: my first disc based storage was a 3" drive
Ash: i think only amstrad ever used it
petertheta: you should download WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREGAME when u get a sec. it's ridiculous
petertheta: 3.5 floppy?
Ash:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/Amstrad_CPC464.jpgAsh: no, 3 inch floppy
Ash: no .5
petertheta: O.o
Ash: and thats my first computer. breathe in it's utter lack of aesthetics
petertheta: it's.... beautiful
Ash: "Amstrad's choice of Hitachi's 3" floppy disk drive, when the rest of the PC industry was moving to Sony's 3.5" format, is claimed to be due to Amstrad bulk-buying a large consignment of 3" drive units in Asia."
petertheta: LOL integrated cassette
Ash: that statement right there, that describes amstrads entire computer design ethos
petertheta: never even HEARD of 3.0 floppy
Ash: "We will buy stuff in bulk, then work out what to do with it"
Ash:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/3_inch_floppy_disks.jpgpetertheta: motther fucker.
Ash: want to know the hoopiest bit about it?
petertheta: what is that shit. that's wrong.
petertheta: what
Ash: transferring tape games to a 3" disk
Ash: in realtime
petertheta: back asswards backup
petertheta: :-)
Ash: I also had a ram expansion module
Ash: that took my 64k amstrad to a whopping 128k
petertheta: ash can you please make an LJ post with your utterances and jpg links so i can scare my social?
Ash: Well, as it's christmas, and tis the season to give mindfucks
Ash: heck, i'll just post this conversation
petertheta: this stuff is nutso :-)
