Character name: Dokugakuji (formerly Sha Jien)
Fandom: Saiyuki
Timeline: Post-Chapter 12 of Reload
Age: Late 20s early 30’s. Anywhere between 29-32 I’d hazard to guess
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Dokugakuji is a youkai, which means he’s stronger and faster than a normal human. He’s an extremely capable warrior with good combat instincts, though like pretty much everyone in Saiyuki he can’t stand against Goku when his diadem is removed.
Unlike the flashier characters in the series Dokugakuji’s main ability is to channel his youkai chi into an extremely sharp sword. Other than that, he seems to depend more on his physical prowess than impressive powers.
How would they use their abilities?: Responsibly. Dokugakuji only fights for one reason: for Kougaiji. Whether it is to protect him or to obey his orders Dokugakuji’s motivation to fight will always be his master.
Appearance: Dokugakuji is tall and built, with black hair and dark eyes. He has also the trademark long pointed ears and a set black tattoo-like birthmarks on his face (one right on his forehead, the other across his nose) that mark him as a youkai. As far as clothing goes Dokugakuji started out wearing pants and a piece of shoulder armor that connected to suspenders to hold his pants up and not much else other than that. Later on he seems to have realized shirts are a rather necessary social item and has since been seen wearing high collared mandarin shirts that button up the front.
Background/Personality: Before Dokugakuji was Kougaiji’s swordsman, he was Sha Jien. He had a relatively normal life until his father had an affair with a human woman and produced a child of taboo from that union. That child of taboo being Gojyo. It’s not really clear what happened to Jien’s father or the human woman he loved, but it’s easiest to presume they both died for whatever reason. Life wasn’t easy because as Gojyo came into the care of Jien’s mother who was becoming mentally unstable. She constantly abused Gojyo because all she could see was the face of the man she loved and another woman. He tried to protect him like a good older brother, even going as far as taking the place of his father and sleeping with his mother. Yeah it’s a little oedipal but his heart was in the right place. I think.
It should have been okay. Jien wasn’t really able to protect Gojyo as much as he should have, but he was doing his best. He knew he wasn’t saving Gojyo by sleeping with his mother but it was all he could do keep her from abusing his little brother more. But she kept abusing Gojyo, and then came the day she tried to kill him. Jien made a choice between his mother and his half-brother. He picked Gojyo and ended up killing his mother before she managed to do more than leave Gojyo with a few physical scars and several emotional scars. However filled with guilt Jien ended running away.
It isn’t clear how long he wandered, but six years before the start of the series he eventually he stumbled into Kougaiji’s castle injured and bleeding. Kougaiji offered him a position as his swordsman; offered him a new life he took it without a second thought because Kougaiji reminded him of the little brother he hadn’t been able to save. While his reasons for serving Kougaiji started out as Dokugakuji came to serve him loyally, regarding the youkai prince as his conscious decision, the one person he would follow no matter what.
Six years later, when the resurrection of Gyumaoh the demon king began under the supervision of Gyokumen Koushu, Kougaiji was given the job of assassinating Sanzo group. What Dokugaku hadn’t been expecting was that the little brother he had left behind would be a part of that group. Small world, right? But facing Gojyo in a fight from opposing sides, Dokugakuji was able to look him in the eye and stick by the path he chose. And despite being enemies, they seem to have a decent relationship, occasionally throwing aside their alignments to team up against a mutual threat. (Like Chin Yisou’s giant ass shikigami.)
However after their failure to kill the Sanzo group, Kougaiji was reassigned to collecting the missing tenchi kaigen sutras. (He wasn’t worried about other assassin’s succeeding since he figured the group would survive until he was done.) Before Dokugaku left with Kougaiji Ni Jianyi gave them a warning to hold onto what was most precious to them, an ominous bit of foreshadowing to the events they’d soon encounter. In the desert searching for a sutra they once again came upon the Sanzo group, and this time they were hurting badly. Sanzo was poisoned by a desert youkai and Kougaiji challenged Goku to a fight to the death in exchange for a lift to the closest town in order to save Sanzo’s life. Desperate to win, Goku removed his diadem and proceeded to wreak havoc on everyone. He wounded Kougaiji badly and then proceeded to beat the shit out of them all until Sanzo stopped them. Taking Kougaiji back to the castle, Dokugakuji had no choice but to let Ni Jianyi take Kougaiji so that he could be healed.
Worst. Decision. EVER. Dokugakuji got sent off to track down a sutra in the desert and by the time he returned Kougaiji had been rewired into a killing machine. Not so good for morale, that. But Dokugakuji stuck by him anyways. Things came to a head when brainwashed Kougaiji was sent to once again claim the maten sutra from Sanzo and company and Dokugakuji and Yaone followed after him like good subordinates, though they ended up getting separated from him and stumbling upon Sanzo, Hakkai and Gojyo drowning in a river. They tried to explain the situation, but ended up derailed by a certain hack-illusionist youkai name Zakuro. There was a struggle of wills as Zakuro messed with the Sanzo-group, and to save Gojyo from Zakuro’s illusions Dokugakuji ended up punching him unconscious. It was an act of love dammit.
Eventually though, Zakuro got his ass kicked and ran away like a loony. (He had a smoke bomb and laughed melodramatically.) Then came the fight of the Sanzo group versus Kougaiji. At first Dokugakuji and Yaone were conflicted because this brainwashed killing machine wasn’t the prince they had originally chosen to serve. But then… they realized it didn’t matter if he was different. They joined the fight, announcing their resolve to serve Kougaiji whether he wanted them to or not. And as inspiring speeches tend to, their loyalty managed to save Kougaiji from the mental conditioning. After a ruse of being knocked out by a strike from Goku, Kougaiji made his comeback by knocking the Sanzo group into the river and the group headed back to their castle to reclaim Lirin from Ni Jianyi.
Personality - Dokugakuji is a person who doesn’t really live for himself, he finds something else to devote himself to and sticks with that come hell or high water. In his case, Dokugakuji’s object of devotion is Kougaiji. He treats the prince as a brother, a leader and a friend. He’s a good person but Dokugaku will be the first to admit he doesn't care about the ressurection of Gyumaoh or even Kougaiji's mother. He's just there to watch Kougaiji's back and make sure the man he's dedicated his life to in a totally platonic way doesn't get killed in the process.
Overall, Dokugaku is a man who is a protector. He needs something to hold onto to keep himself going, and in moments when he loses hold of that thing - like during Kougaiji's brainwashed period - he becomes rather listless and hopeless. He's also sensitive to his failings, and even years after the fact being reminded of his oedipal mistakes and failure to protect his little brother can cut him to the bone, revealing the guilt still lurking there even after so many years.
A bit of a stereotypical big brother figure, Dokugaku is rather easy going. He has a casual enough relationship with Kougaiji to tease him and call him by nicknames like 'Kou' or 'Skinny'. But Dokugakuji is easily riled up when someone he values is in danger or is being threatened by something. He's quick to shout and will resort to violence if he has to. He's extremely adaptable in his loyalties, doing what he feels is right rather than sticking to a black and white view of alliances. He trusts people based on what he can see rather than what he's told, which is probably why at various times during canon he's taken the time to fight alongside the Sanzo group or offer them warnings.

Shit… is this thing on...?
Okay… Shit. I don’t even know what the hell I’m supposed to say on this stupid thing.
Just filled out paperwork from hell and…
Kou, Lirin, Yaone. If your asses are here you better tell me. I’m not searching this entire ship for you.
[Some jostling sounds like he’s trying to turn it off. Apparently he hasn’t succeeded since it records the next thing he mutters.]
Don’t care if it makes me a bad guy, I won’t feel too sorry if that bitch and that scientist bastard are dead after everything they did…
Hn… I need a drink.
Oh shit- It’s still on?
Goddamn-

3rd person sample:
Dokugakuji would be the first to admit he had made more than his allotment of mistakes in the course of his life. He still regretted the consequences of some of those choices, choices like killing his mother to save his brother. He'd been forced to make a choice he shouldn't have had to make, but he made it all the same and couldn't take it back.
As he leaned against a railing of one of the many open balconies of Houtou castle and looked up at the sky overhead he decided that well... maybe that was for the best. He'd happily admit that choosing to follow Kougaiji was probably the smartest decision he'd made in years. His motives hadn't been the best at the time of his choice; but he'd found something worth fighting for.
“Nyah~ You look like an old man starin' at the sky~!”
He narrowed his eyes at Lirin and frowned, though it wasn't a serious one. He was used to Lirin's singsong teasing of everyone. “I'm not that old yet, brat.”
“Well if ya aren't then you can go spar with onii-chan~ He's lookin' for ya!”
“Go tell skinny I'll be there soon.” He smiled as the little girl tore off down the hallways. Stepping away from the railing, Dokugakuji didn't look back at the sky. Kougaiji needed to get stronger, so he cast aside his thoughts for another day and went to go spar while they were still had the time.
