To almost plagarize Karl (orientation leader and asuw director of oporations or something): A contest is underway. I've been saying I'd like to see this campus become even more political and maybe this contest could be the catalyst we need ... Read more... )

i don't mean to sound snobish or pompus, but why is it that whenever people (escpecialy young people) get political, they always talk as if everyone else knows what they are talking about? they just skip over the premise and go strait to the emotional editorial garbage.

ie: why arn't the young conservatives fighting their own war?

seriously. what the fuck does that mean?

my problem with the yellow elephant is that it's a left wing operation not-so-cleverly-disguised as a public service to get young people to vote. obviously, it's to swindle young people into the democratic party.

not that there is anything WRONG with the left wing agenda.

the most obvious problem with yellow elephant is that it implies chicken shit republicans. last time i checked, the young republicans of america are not going to college. they're in the millitary, risking their lives for our freedom of speech.

in my humble opinion, young people of america are not under-informed. we have almost too much information available on the issue of politics. the problem is, it's all contradictory information. it's hard to tell the difference between what's right and wrong.

it's all over exagerated like my "they're dying for our right of free speech" statement.

republican = nazi!
liberal = freedom!

Ah, my friend, I think you gravely misunderstand OYE. Your statement that Young Republicans are not in the military is clearly counter-factual; one needs only to step onto a college campus to find Young Republican clubs overflowing with members advocating war. The problem lies in the fact that many of these chickenhawks don't realize that their advocating for war means that tens of thousands of people must die.

Clearly, the beef is not with those who sign up. Clearly. It's with those who enjoy a privileged lifestyle that precludes their joining the military and putting their lives on the line and yet DEMAND that others do so.

Are there legitimate reasons for not joining the military? Of course. The point here is to remind them of the sacrifice they're demanding from others and ask: "Would you be willing to take it yourself? If not, why not?" That should provoke a good deal of self-reflection, but predicatbly we see only defensiveness and anger.

Absolutely correct. With whom would be more fun to engage in tipsy snobbery than me? No one. That's who.

Are you in town?? Is Nandini still here? I completely missed Matthew while he was home. If yes, we should oprganize our own elitist snobbery.
