what it's really about is that the state of california should have stayed the fuck out of social dealings. if they'd never thrown it on the ballot, nobody'd be upset. yet they allowed it to go.
California's Prop 8 is a solid example of what I was saying about why direct democracy isn't a good form of government. Majority rule cannot protect the rights of the minority. Things like this are the very reason we are a representative republic, and why our federal government has no initiative system.
Yeah I'm beginning to see what you're getting at. I think I just have a hard time with it because, again, my dealings with political structure is sub-par. Today I just watched apart of the Republican Governors' Conference (or something like that, I can't remember the exact name of the org. right now) with Palin speaking. She was talking about healthcare independence and energy planning. I think I started to agree with her points, but I think that at the state level, I need to develop a better understanding of what the impacts are of these very important issues before I have any real opinion on them.
As for my reading O'Rourke's On the Wealth of Nations my altruism hypothesis was slammed in one line. So I guess that's out and I have to think of something else. In the mean time, it's a good read but I still have to dig up my copy of Marx just for fun.
