i dont know - for me the mystery was "What the hell is David doing? Why is he posioning Holloway? Why is he trying to make Shaw keep the 'baby'?" Those motives seemed seperate from the Help Weyland Live Forever plot and looking back I still cant figure out why he did that.
Also - why the engineers decided to make these crazy mutate serums? If it broke them down - like the first one at the begining of the movie - I would understand it but why that? Why did they make their WMDs at all? Why do they even care about humans - who live on a distant planet and are minding their won damn business. Those are the mysteries that got to me. Especially since they were never answered.
Here's what I got from it - David is like Pinocchio, he want's be be a real boy. It's why we have that toss away comment from the holo-Weyland about David being like a son, except for the fact that he had no soul. David's wondering if the Engineers are real, can they make him real? And additionally, he's just curious, designed to be curious, and if there's the possibility of becoming more human, or gaining some immortality for Weyland, then he's going to test it. He just needs subjects
