Calling manly men!

Today, I knocked myself out stripping the minging old wallpaper from the bathroom.  Seeing as the bathroom had a permanent damp patch for nearly ten years, I should be grateful that only a couple of patches of plaster came down.  There are two patches, one, the smaller onw being a strip about 2" wide by about a foot long, right where the wall joins ( Read more... )

Well I'm not a manly man but I have got a fair bit of experience sorting such things. Firstly I assume the damp has been resolved ( ... )

So much for my grand plan to paint the bathroom this weekend. The holes are not that deep (about 5 mm) but the plaster is a bit iffy in places. The plan is to freshen the house up, as I am selling it fairly soon, so I don't need a ten year fix, though it may have to last me 18 months!

I'm fairly sure that if I tried to take the wood chip off the ceiling (I hate woodchip) the whole ceiling would come down, and then I would need a plasterer so I'm not going there. Hard to tell with the damp, as it it's the bit of the bathroom where all the condensation accumulates, and I'm not going without a bath until it dries out ;-).

Current plan is to polyfilla it and stick up some polystyrene coving over the top of the mess. I like coving, in any case!

If you want quick fix then polyfiller and cover with a slightly textured (don't go big texture see below) wallpaper or possibly better in a bathroom one of those thick slightly squashy waterproof papers.. I hate them but they do work certainly to cover things up and help keep water from walls. Or indeed tiles.

To paint without wallpaper you either need to use textured paint which is a pain to clean... not good in a bathroom, try getting mold out of the bumps!! or have a very smooth surface cos paint makes bump shows up more.

We had the unusual experience of finding a friendly and knowledgable chappie in Homebase who got us all set up with the products we need, including damp proof paint, and some stuff called smoothover which is apparently dead easy to use.
