Volunteer-run organizations

Before anyone gets excited, I want to stress first that though the idea to write this down came from a current discussion in the spiritual community I'm in.. it also applies to a LARPing organization I'm an officer with, and other volunteer events and conventions I have a role in. I'm starting to get involved in one of the local cons (Penguicon) for essentially those reasons. Not any kind of unhappiness about the old boys network, at least not on my part, but because I can see things that I can add, and we'll see how well they turn out!

The flips side is over-volunteering, and I know people who do that. I've done that, too, and then went to no volunteering at all for a while, and am now working on the process of picking what things I can make the biggest difference in, or what things I want to contribute to the most, as opposed to overdoing it and making myself stretched too thin and therefore miserable.
