50 Books Starting Over

Feb 02, 2009 23:56

I decided I'm going to start, appropriately in January. I know, I know . . . all those books that no longer count. But it will be a lot easier to track this way. And I even have a spreadsheet!

So far:

1. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin ( Read more... )

I really liked the Left Hand of Darkness too, and it's been so long that I forgot about the shifting POV. That's how well she did it.

The Dresden series is really addictive, and you only see Butcher grow as a writer as the series continues. Unlike most (okay, all) neverending fantasy series, I haven't suddenly become bored or annoyed with it. I have to say that I almost like his Codex Alera series better.

Right now I'm also enjoying Naomi Novik's series, which mixes Britain's war with Napoleon...and dragons. It's a nice twist.

Yes, I'm finding Dresden to be very addictive. I ended up buying #3 and #4 from Powell's and am very anxious for them to get here! I'll have to try out the Codex Alera series, too, as well as the Naomi Novik series. Thanks for the recommendations!

I know it's been a long time since you posted this, but it just occurred to me that maybe the reason you haven't become bored or annoyed with the Dresden Files is that, although there is a definite character progression, it's not one whole long story that never stops. In other words, each book is really a different book with it's own clear beginning and ending. I've since finished all the books, and you're right: they just keep getting better. Although, I have to say my personal favorite is still Dead Beat.

I was, lately, thinking about how much I like Monk, the TV show, as opposed to Heroes, which I used to really like, and one of the key things for me is that each episode is complete in itself. I think the same thing might be going on with those long fantasy series.
