Long story short, Befana followed the three wise men, traveling to see this baby Jesus all the cool kids were talking about. But since she was old and traveling on foot, she couldn't keep up, so the caravan slowly moved out of sight. I don't know how widespread it is. It may just be localized to Italy (or possibly southern Italian, where my mom grew up). At the same time, this is also, I believe, the Feast of Three Kings (i.e. the wise guys ;P).
