LJ Idol: Season 9, Week 11: Recency Bias

Jun 09, 2014 19:02

Here is where I channel my inner Andy Rooney. Remember him? For you younguns, he was a longtime correspondent for 60 Minutes on CBS, with a weekly column describing the world as he saw it. We operate with a certain recency bias; specifically, a bias against the present day.

Well put! I appreciate a certain amount of nostalgia--who doesn't?--but sometimes the worship of the past really annoys me. I could sit around and theorize as to why it's such a big deal, but really, it's nice here, in the present, and I'll just curl up with my electronic tablet (aka the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and enjoy it.

I might be more willing to let go of the past if I didn't still have the lyrics to every 80's pop song ever stuck in my brain (not sure why your piece made me think of this, but there you go).

A certain amount of nostalgia is built in I think, but people who hide their heads in the past are missing out.

This reminds me of the Bowling for Soup song, 1985. Please tell me you don't have a yellow SUV. :)

I too am nostalgic about a lot of the things I grew up around, especially those that were denied to me due to my fundamentalist upbringing. Thanks for reading.

Memory lane isn't such a bad place, so long as we don't live there. Thanks for reading!

It's definitely great for amusement, and I certainly like reliving some of those "glory days" especially in the form of classic video games, but living in the past just doesn't work so well. Thanks for reading, as always :).
