i remember after the 2008 election there was a project called from 52 to 48 (or something similar), and it was basically photos of people holding up hopeful signs. lots of people who'd voted democrat saying, basically, "we have to work together and i'm extending my hand to you across the aisle because we can do this and i'm going to make sure your voice is heard", and lots of people who'd voted republican saying, basically, "i'm extending my hand to you too and i'm ready to work together". (also the occasional photo from a non-american, and a bunch from, like, couples where one voted repub and one voted dem.) there was a lot of hope that everyone could make the country great again, and that repubs and dems - at least the average jane and joe on the street - could work together and get shit done. and the thing you said to your quaker meeting made me think of that - it's a very gracious, generous thing to extend to people who are politically your enemy, especially since they probably wouldn't have returned the favor. it's really ( ... )

The past six years of politics have created a hardened cynicism in me that I had never expected to feel. I'd always had a distrusting streak, but I never expected to lose hope like this. The amount of hatred and bad faith and dishonesty is astounding, as is the lack of will to point it out for what it is (this includes the nauseating, misleading use of the both-sides meme).

I had hope for this country, for about a month, until it all came crashing down in a pile of spite.

It's funny, religion and it's hold on a collective came to me also for this topic. I stayed away because I felt it might be too inflammatory. The Catholic Church is probably the greatest example if IS I could come up with. I, as a recovering Catholic find it uncanny that despite many of us leaving the church, the guilt we feel runs deep. There are soo soo many levels of religious indoctrination people may never see past it, not to mention that it is THE greatest source of division and war. It(religion) is also the greatest source of prejudice and hatred, regardless of its so called message of love.

I remain horrified by the number of people who can't manage, despite all of our differences, to see each other as people; and as you point it happens on all sides of the spectrum.

It's rare to hear a call for compassion for those considered political foes. It would be a better world if both sides would do so.
