Continued Textbook Saga (+ some things making me happy)

Sep 03, 2010 00:20

Okay, so, in the time since my last post, I have:

Calmed down, eaten, watched some Supernatural, and got a night's sleep.

Discovered that it's actually against school policy to require the purchase of books that are not available in the library.  The textbooks for this course, incidentally, are not available in the library.  Resumed incandescent rage.  (In case you're wondering, the weepy panic of last post?  Only partly due to the sudden financial eek.  Much of it was, apparently, what happens when I get very very angry at something I would feel very very bad about punching in the face.)  Raged much more productively this time, because I'd upgraded to Attack Mode! and for me Attack Mode! is also Strategy Mode! and Well-Spoken Mode! and Muster the Troops Mode!

Consulted my troops via Facebook status, whereupon I decided to take a page out of Sun Tzu's book (which I really need to read one of these days, rather than just bullshit-paraphrasing the tiny bits I know of) and make diplomacy my first wave of attack.

While strategizing said attack, search the UW interlibrary loan system for the books I need.  Find two, including the most expensive of the lot (incidentally, also the one the local bookseller we're meant to be buying these through doesn't have in stock and may not even have a wholesaler for) and the other is one I have readings assigned from for the 15th (first day we're meant to have read something for).  Also found another for $4.50 off Amazon Marketplace, but NOT one of the other two I need to start reading very soon.  Still, I'm only two required texts short ($90 total - doable, but still daunting, and given the circumstances... the crusade has begun).

Somewhere in here, I found out that I'm going to get free voice lessons this semester.  Most fall semesters, there's a voice pedagogy class, and every student gets a student of their very own to practice on - the guinea pigs are picked via first-come first-served volunteer basis, and apparently I came first... or among the first 18, at any rate.  Should be fun, and I've kinda been wanting proper singing lessons for a while.

I ate some more, watched some more Supernatural, and slept another night.

Reached the stress point where I become very, very easily distracted by stupid addictive internet games.  Drafted a polite, reasonable letter to the Bookstore Crusader prof, in which I addressed my problems and their cause, and requested assistance in remedying those problems, without actually accusing him or mentioning university policy (ie, placed enough blame to make him maybe feel guilty, but not enough to put him on the defensive).  Send email to the troops to proofread.

Somewhere in there, I found out that auditions for Anatomy of Gray are on Tuesday the 7th, rather than the week after, like I thought.  This is a little scary, because I'm learning a new monologue for it, and I haven't put much work in yet (Cavale's ugly duckling speech from Cowboy Mouth).  Meep.  But in a fun way.  I think.

Take the rest of the afternoon off, because classes started the next day, there's a family-visit trip AND and an airsoft game this week, and I hadn't done anything to get ready for either.  Succeed in putting stray books away, putting away all the clean laundry occupying my studying nook, dusting, setting out clothes for the morning, put new notepaper & dividers in my binder, and washed dishes.  Still haven't gotten my camping gear and stuff together for the weekend.

Got feedback on the email draft.  To sleepy and allergy-laden to make adjustments.  You know the drill: food, Supernatual, sleep.

Alarm, clothes, coffee, oatmeal, juice.  Revise email, send it to the prof, go to class.  Yay first day.

Stats is very boring.  Is it worth the boredom and the mornings?  We shall see.

Ballet II turned out pretty well.  Didn't forget as much as I thought I had (though my chase and saute - that looks so weird written down - still sucks monkey balls), and I'm not the only one who didn't practice as much as they should have.

Jazz Dance I was huge lots of fun.  Although I've found some new places to be sore because of it... (that spot on you leg that's kind of your shin but kind of also your ankle, for one).  Oh, and I don't have to worry about explaining why I'm always late to Styles in Acting, because the prof's in Jazz with me! :D Which, because he has a considerable dance background, means that this crowd of 20-ish women are probably going to spend an entire semester being out-boogied by a middle-aged man (bastard ;)).  Which is kind of seriously awesome.

Speaking of, Styles sounds like it's going to be a ridiculously difficult and grueling class, focusing half on Chekov and half on post-modernism.  I suspect I will love it to bits.  Our first assignment is due Tuesday, and consists of having our monologues ready to be critiqued and polished in class before Anatomy of Gray auditions later that afternoon.

Came home to find a package in my mailbox containing corset bones, a busk, and one gross of grommets.  Now I just need time to sew the damn thing.  :)

Also when I came home, there were two emails from the Bookstore Crusader.  Short version: he's cooperating slightly.  But enough.  He'll put the readings from three of the books up on the the school's shared network hard drive thingy and on the annoying online thingamabob component that most classes use to some extent.  There were some other things, included some mitigating factors in the whole situation.  Also there were some things that tripped my bullshit detector and make me want to call him on it and/or question him further.  But I won't because A) I don't think he's being at all disingenuous, just that he has some bullshit assumptions that he's acting on, and B) he has appeased me enough that I don't want to pursue it at the risk of developing an adversarial relationship with someone I'm meant to be learning cool fun stuff from for the semester.

And then I went to the student-everythinged play, Cannibal Days, and it was awesome.

So was the last three days.  And now, if you'll excuse me, it is waaay past my bedtime...
