The best episode yet! (With some caveats).

I totally agree about Aramis and Anne. There's a number of fans on the net who think they'll be each others 'one true person' but that's very unlikely to ever happen, Anne is the Queen of France and in her eyes, God expects her to be loyal to the King, though I totally understand how lonely she must feel at times - the King clearly doesn't love her as a husband should, though he likes her and needs her. I think you explained their motivation for sleeping together perfectly...

It looks like the final is going to be great, since ALL the reviews I've seen have been positive and that's not happened before.

That's a good sign!

I've always been a bit blasé about shipping, so there's a chance that the show means for Aramis/Anne to be True Love, though if so, it was an odd decision to reintroduce his former flame in the same episode that he sleeps with Anne. I guess we'll just have to wait to see how the shift in dynamic plays out...

I didn't realise that Helene was Queen Ygraine, now that is all twisted in my mind! Pity they killed her off (and then have him sleep with Anne straight away!) the rest was good
Go Mother Superior!!

Re: Aramis and Anne, this show has demonstrated before that its characters work towards the "good of France" rather themselves, so I don't think it will ever happen.

Re: an episode like this in Merlin, it could have been great, but unfortunately Merlin had the wrong set of writers, their reaction would be, hey, she killed the Lamia, you want more Gwen??
oh, and talking of Merlin, here we have a female villain (Milady) yet we are feeling for her when she shows she's fearful of the Cardinal, we were never supposed to feel for Morgana, even though she was drugged, lied to, poisoned, feared for herself and others and finally chained in a pit for 2 years!

Yeah, "Lamia" was definitely the closest Merlin ever got to a plot like this, though the knights were brainwashed and Gwen largely undermined the whole way through. Still, it makes me wistful for what might have been.

I love this take on Milady: you can't possibly "hate" despite her actions, and both she and the Cardinal are such great villains that you actually feel tense for them when the Musketeers start closing in. One episode left! It's nice to be looking forward to it instead of dreading it.

There are many episodes of different shows that make me wistful (or downright bitter and angry!) for what might have been in Merlin

YES! there is that worry and dramatic tension that surrounds the Cardinals and Milady' s actions, it probably helps that we all know Peter Capaldi won't be returning for another season.
