-November-There was only one true way to heal a girl’s broken heart: food. To be more exact: sweets.

Thus, it wasn’t surprising when the end of the month of festivities for Halloween brought in a lot of sugary goodness into Devi’s home. Nor was it surprising when her friends and family, or just Devon, found her to be missing in action for weeks.

The remedy to cure a girl’s broken heart is also their enemy. Food paralleled weight, and that was the last thing Devi needed if she was going to get herself a man. Wait. Hadn’t she already given up on that?

“Riya’s left us for good,” Devi whined, rolling herself on the living room couch lazily.

Devon tried to ignore her, but it was hard. “She’ll come back.”

“No, Devon, she won’t. She made that clear enough. She’s going to some place with a name that I can’t even pronounce, she’ll find some rich man - not that she’s not rich enough - and she’ll get married and have children. Me? I’ll be stuck here with you.”

“There’s Lyn,” Devon shrugged, shifting himself into a more comfortable position at the dining table so he could have easier access to his sketching.

Devi rolled her eyes, “She’s too infatuated with you.”

“As much as I will regret saying this, you can always search Jayin out?”

Devi sat up and turned to face him. “What? Are you saying you won’t be around, too? I don’t even have you? My life’s pathetic.”

Devon just blinked at her with a straight face.

“Okay, fine. I didn’t need you anyways.”

Devon shook his head. “Did you not get your daily dose of sugar or something?”

“I did,” Devi giggled, “but can you imagine if I was deranged?”

Devon laughed. “Sadly, I can.”

-

It was one of those days where one couldn’t help but to worry for their own health: it was Thanksgiving, and this year Lyn was responsible for the catering.

“Riya should have at least waited until after Thanksgiving,” Lyn pouted, staring at the thawing turkey on the counter top, “I’m seriously starting to worry about her.”

Jayin shrugged, “I’m sure she’ll be fine.” How did lying come so easily to him?

Lyn sighed, “Maybe.”

Devi and Kylan arrived not longer after Lyn finished preparing the stuffing for the turkey. They held bags of drinks and other goods with them. Devi made sure to bring lots of sweets.

“Are you almost done?” Devi asked with a grin. Lyn nodded.

Kylan peered around, spotting Devon sketching at the couch. “You’re not going to at least help her? You should contribute something, you know. Not just sit there and leech.”

“I don’t see you offering any help,” Devon retorted.

Kylan held up his bag of drinks with a victorious smile. “Now get to it.”

Devon groaned as he got to his feet and ventured to the kitchen, asking Lyn if she needed help with anything. It wasn’t as bad as he had expected; watching Lyn make messes and cleaning up after her was actually pretty interesting.

“Why are they the only ones who get a happy ending?” Kylan sighed.

Jayin laughed, “Because they’re simple.”

“I’m simple!” Kylan protested.

“In the mind, maybe.”

Kylan threw Jayin a glare before retreating back to the couch. Devon’s sketch book sat sprawled atop the table and it was just tempting enough for Kylan to try to sneak a peek before his conscience got the best of him and he flipped it shut.

Devi laughed.

“What?” Kylan asked.

Devi crossed her arms over her torso. “You really are simple minded. No wonder Riya-“ Devi paused, hesitant to continue her sentence, “Ugh, I miss her.”

“So do I,” Jayin confessed, “Riya and her witty, bookworm self.”

Lyn poked her head out of the kitchen. “We never did get the tattoo in the end.”

“That’s right,” Devi pouted, “I was looking forward to it, too.”

Devon stepped out of the kitchen, “You were going to get Lyn a tattoo?”

“What’s it to you?” Devi challenged.

“She’s my-“ Devon caught his tongue, fighting back a blush, “Nothing.” Lyn laughed.

Devi smirked, “That’s what I thought.”

“Aren’t we supposed to be thankful tonight?” Kylan asked, “Let’s just be thankful we can all be here together today.”

“And hope that we have an addition next year,” Devi added, “Maybe two.”

“Don’t tell me you’re pregnant,” Devon shouted from the kitchen.

Jayin rolled his eyes, “Is that even possible? She’s single.”

“Don’t remind me!” Devi scowled, “A boyfriend would be nice, though.”

“You’re too desperate,” Kylan commented, “Maybe that’s the problem.”

Devi glared at him, “You weren’t desperate enough, maybe that’s your problem.”

Kylan shrugged, “You see, we should be thankful that we have each other to tell each other our issues. Point proven.”

“Ugh!” Devi groaned, “I should just leave like Riya did! Her plan sounded nice anyhow.”
“What’s stopping you?” Jayin teased.

Devi puffed her cheeks angrily and was about to retort when a kinder voice called out to them. Lyn hauled out a large plate in her arms, carrying it to the dining table. “Alright, stop teasing her. The Thanksgiving feast officially begins!”

This November was a cold one. Those who were single remained single, those who were in love remained in love, and those who were drama queens remained a drama queen. Some things were missing, some things were found. Some things came and some things go. November was a month to be grateful, even if there were broken hearts, potentially sick stomachs and… not potentially sick stomachs but something along those lines.

In the midst of eating, Devon noticed that Lyn suddenly stiffened.

“You okay?” Devon asked worriedly.

Lyn parted her lips to reply but no words formed.

“Lyn, are you alright?” Devi attempted.

Lyn grasped her stomach in agony as she ran from the dining room. Devon and Devi chased after her, trailing her to the bathroom.

Jayin and Kylan sat in silence for a while, hearing the sick gurgling and painful groans the little girl was wailing in the distance. It took them a while to decipher what was going on. Then Jayin grinned and Kylan couldn’t stop laughing.

Devi wore the biggest smirk that anyone in the world could manage as she helped Lyn to her feet. She turned to Devon. “What was that about being pregnant again?”
