Devon watched from afar the others who lingered amongst their homes, rather than a lively holiday season, it was rather tranquil and quiet on his street. He sighed as he walked closer to home, surprised to see Jayin outside, helping to put on the lights.
When Jayin looked back, he answered to Devon’s silent question and pouted. “Devi put me to work.”
Devon shook his head as he walked inside, with the intent to sketch in the meantime, he couldn’t help but glanced back at Jayin’s horrible work. Clearly irritated, he dropped what he was doing and went over to help.
“I’m surprised you haven’t just throw them all over.” Kylan called out as he huddled his jacket, appearing shortly after.
“I did but Devon’s making me redo my art!” Jayin whined, he was now covered in ropes. “They’re strangling my creative spirit.”
Kylan doubted throwing the lights over a house was anything near creative, but nodded solemnly. “He has been a little moody lately, kind of hard to tell who’s really the one pregnant.”
“It won’t only be your creative spirit that dies.”
Kylan looked up to see Devon glaring intently in his direction from the rooftop.was on the rooftop. He cleared his throat. “I say that with all the love in the world!”
“You weren’t exactly Mr. Sunshine either.” Devon barked back, Kylan shrugged apologetically as he walked towards the house.
“I was easier to deal with, I believe.” Kylan added under his breath. Before he could completely relax, he fell on the snowy ground and straightened up only slightly to see that he was now buried and tangled in lights.
He looked up as Devon gave a miffed smile. “As you were saying?”

Riya smiled as she read the text, it was a stolen shot of Lyn who was running to the bathroom with a comment on the bottom ‘Guess who’s going to be the godmother?’
She hadn’t always responded to the texts the majority of the time, but she continually read each update. She gazed at the scenery in front of her and breathed in the fresh air, standing before the many mountains and the distance beyond them.
A second text message awakened her from her trance and she opened it and laughed at its contents.
‘Devi has given up on men and has her eyes on my baby!’

His mind couldn’t stay focus on the attempted lectures by his professor. That, and Jayin could only focus on the two distant classmates who repeatedly text discreetly on the phone during and in between classes. He was relieved to know that things were now in the open, and hopeful that the distance had changed nothing at all.
And while his gaze remained on Lyn a moment longer than he should’ve, he never once felt he had to keep it completely secret. He simply chose to relax as he helped her out after classes, watching as Devi nearly plowed her onto the floor by sheer excitement alone from being asked on a date.
“If I don’t protect her, the baby might have to suffer, and tying up Devi for seven months won’t be manageable.” He acknowledged to himself. “It is my duty to protect her.” He swore to himself in an exaggerated majestic tone with his fist against his chest.
He cringed slightly as Devi had to catch Lyn before she fell. The belly hasn’t even shown but already Lyn was being treated as glass. Pursued by her slightly dangerous and thoughtless friend was a scary thought.
“Devi, please don’t kill the mother of my future nephew.” Jayin pleaded lightly with his hands pressed together. “I still haven’t Lyn-proof the house, much less the school.”
“Nephew? You’re not related.” Devi said as Lyn glowered at his words.
“We’ll soon be, by marriage.” Jayin said casually as he lost his smile. “I’m still choosing between you and Kylan, still weighing the benefits and the disadvantages.”
Devi glared as Lyn settled into the seat, resuming her cheerful smile.
“Kylan is easily in the lead however.” Jayin thought out loud as he stared at his hands. “Although Hatvon is still an adorable kitten and I want to be his father, if he wasn’t so cute, this decision would be so much easier.”
“Kylan isn’t even related!” Devi shouted.
“You and Jayin aren’t compatible either.” Lyn said out loud, earning another dismissive glance from Devi. “Well, you aren’t...”
“He’s Devon’s long lost brother, he’s close enough.” Jayin reasoned. Devi parted her lips to argue when he helped reached for Lyn’s bag and walked ahead. She tried to argue her way in but was shushed by the librarian the moment they entered the library. Devi still couldn’t maintain her silence and it earned her to be promptly escorted out.
“What happened?” Kylan asked as the Devi stalked towards them in one of the benches outside. He continued to fidget and try to warm his hands, having no other choice but to sit out in the cold.
“Nothing of your concern,” She said irritably, she then narrowed her eyes dangerously at Kylan. “I hope you’re happy.”
“I...was...” Kylan said slowly. “Should I not be?”
“No, but marriage should make anyone happy, will I ever experience it? No! But I hope you and Jayin are very happy together!” She belted as she stomped off in the other direction. Kylan stared with wide eyes, unsure of how to take that statement.
He turned to his side, used to the action of telling his best friend, but the moment he took in his expression he knew it simply wasn’t the time. Devon had been too caught in thoughts he hadn’t yet voiced and while it bothered Kylan, he decided he would wait until he felt ready to do so. He just wished it didn’t take the other so long to vent. He didn’t completely appreciate how Devon was acting like a robot most of the time either, if he thought he was lonesome before, this was a far new reach.
Devon continued to stare around, but he wasn’t able to take in his surroundings. The moment he did arrive home, it was as if his life was altered almost altogether. This constant movement of people around him he wasn’t used to. He wasn’t sure whether to resist this unfamiliar surroundings or simply go along with it.
He was so used to sitting on that outside porch in silence and caught up in a world of his own. Then one night on those steps, he felt a weight on his shoulder and looked to see Kylan lulling to sleep.
It was strange to him how relieved he felt that he was also used to the feeling of Kylan sitting beside him all this time, without question or thought, he had grown to his presence. It was gnawing him how it was only a year when they were barely on speaking terms, when that gap between had widened to such a degree that he was afraid it wouldn’t lessen.
Kylan was forced to open his eyes when something sharp hit his head, exhausted, his fingers traced the rectangular object on his head and tried to pull it. It was met with some resistance and he furrowed his eyebrows, he turned around and noticed it was the same sketchbook that laid in Devon's hands.
"I'm surprised you're not inside." Devon commented. "It's too cold for you."
Kylan rubbed his head, “This violent tendency of yours is making me worry for the baby.”
“Rest assured, it only applies to you.”
“How sweet...” Kylan said dryly, “And believe me, I’m this close to leaving you, I’m surprised at my own persistence.” He reached for the sketchbook and twirled it in his hands. “I’m almost jealous that the others are at Lyn’s place but it’ll bother me too much if I’m too far away from you.”
“...Lyn needs all the care she can get... Sometimes I don’t think the four of us are enough.” He said exasperatedly, remembering just a few days before that the living room almost caught on fire.
Kylan chuckled. “Seeing you worry is almost adorable- I said almost.” He quickly fixed, that didn’t decrease his dark look given his way. “Look, it’s obvious you’re worried right?”
Devon quirked his head at the question and acted oblivious.
It took Kylan’s pulling to finally get him to stand up, they didn’t bother with the car and continued their long walk towards her house. Their footsteps were left behind in the snow as Devon occasionally closed his eyes as he enjoyed the frigid embrace, Kylan on the other hand struggled to maintain warmth.
"Please tell me you're just as afraid as I am." Kylan finally mustered. “You, a family man, it doesn’t go.” He seemed almost terrified of the thought.
“It's a weird thought to process." Devon admitted. "Nothing is going as we planned, life fails us every time and I’m not appreciating this adventure.” He ranted as he crossed his arms. “You should be in this situation, not me.”
“I’m sorry my love life didn’t work out as well as yours has.” Kylan said sarcastically, he smiled however. "You don't have to rely on yourself anymore, you don’t have to stay so quiet. And though I'm sorry to say you can't rely on me either, but since you were willing to hear me out-"
"I was clearly forced against my will." Devon corrected.
"That's not how I remembered it." Kylan assured with a smile, he stretched his arms over his head. “How is your family taking it? Has this affected them?”
Devon flipped the hair out of eyes. “Not at all. Remember, as far as anyone else knows, we’re a nice, normal family. And that’s how we’re planning on keeping it as.”
He raised his gaze towards the recognizable house that was now covered in lights, he slowed down his pace as he remained in the silent and cold solitude outdoors. He knew beyond anything, that he never wanted to remain alone forever.
And as Kylan walked around him in circles, he felt almost comforted by his best friend who still complained under his breath. Assured as Lyn walked outside and greeted them outside, only to be ushered inside by both Jayin and Devi.
“Let’s refrain from physical contact, shall we? This is how you got in trouble in the first place.” Jayin said. "I knew I should have kept a better eye."
Lyn didn’t bother to argue back and instead looked earnestly at Devon. “If you don’t come in soon, I will drag you inside.” She then pointed at Kylan. “And I will separate the two of you if he doesn’t.”
Kylan could only give a nervous laugh at Lyn's sudden determination. Devon, absentmindedly tugged a loose string from Kylan’s jacket and pulled it, but it was unrelenting in where it ended. Just as stubborn as they were.
They were each tugging each string that connected one another, manipulating and twisting the strings that pulled each one closer until they were bounded. Devon felt almost relieved at the thought, because it meant that one fear was nearly gone.
“If anything,” Kylan stated as he looked longingly at the house. “I’ll try my best to listen as you talk, it’ll be hard at first but I’ll attempt this end of the stick.”
“Can we just snap the stick in half already?”
He earned a smack to the back of the head and winced.
"Never." Kylan asserted, grinning as they rushed inside the house as Devon lingered outside.
He watched as Devi threatened Kylan once again with his life, Jayin still forever beside Lyn as they focused on the shows. Devon had always kept his eyes trained on each of them, finding it strange how they their lives tied together. And as Devon looked outside once more, his gaze following the almost seemingly endless lighted path of the many houses around. He knew that while he was comfortable in such a scene, he appreciated the warmth inside as well.
He flipped his hair back as he took one step inside,
“Next time you get in my way of an important phone call, I will tie this cord around your neck!”
Devon sighed as he realized that despite it all, he was still surrounded by idiots.
Jayin who remained behind Lyn, oblivious to the death glares sent his way by Devi. The text messages Lyn continually sent to Riya who remained updated on the immature antics occurring at the moment. Devon who sat beside her with the nearby windows opened despite Kylan’s protests.
The constant fear of being abandoned, cast aside, for each of them, was laid dormant beneath those warm lights.

A/N: It's finally done. I am behind the deadline by eighth months @.@ So happy though ^^ Easily my favorite character is Devon amongst them all, in all of my parts I wrote him in, this chapter is no exception. Sorry Lien for taking so long~ I was so lost at what to do ;A;
Hope anyone who reads it, likes it and know that our characters took a life of their own. Finally a year is gone :) (And a half but ignoring that.)
