Huh. Can you give some examples of what "competing publics" actually means? Because I really like the way this breaks up that dichotomy. (Are there also competing privates? Does everyone have their own personal private, which no-one else knows about because it's, well, private? Or is there one specific set of things that are considered the private sphere, and that's just all there is to it?)
