Maybe you should upgrade to Windows 7 or something. They have a "previous versions" feature that lets you recover previous versions of a file. There are also other software that helps you recover deleted things (but usually they're slow and painful).
I know, with Office 2010 (which is a free beta download right now), it'll give you the previous versions feature.

You could also write them out in gmail or copy and paste it to gmail occasionally!
