Week 25 "Catbird's Seat"

SARGESarge sat quietly at the foot of the stairs. He wanted to savor the moment. In a few minutes, he would climb them to the stage and address the newest batch of applicants to the Academy. When he finished, that would be it, his career would be over, a thought which saddened and scared him. What would he do next ( Read more... )

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! What a treat this week, G! Funny and sweet. Poignant and bizarre. Your knack for combining human emotions into one delicious baked good is impressive! I loved this.

I hoped this wasn't overly sweet. I didn't want to send anyone to the dentist. The idea of the catbird came first; I don't know where the police dogs came from. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is such a breath of fresh air for me! I love the take on the topic, I love the adorable catbird at the end, just everything.

I think the thing I enjoyed most was honestly the fact that in this world there is a specific law against creating new creatures that combine predator and prey. What an amazingly specific crime.

Also, the image of that whole group of sweet babies - I mean dogs - just makes me smile. Good work :)

Thank you so much! I needed a law against predator/prey pets -- who wouldn't want a flying cat? Perhaps I could have introduced a dogbird to chase the catbird and written a real aerial dogfight.

“As a K-9 unit, you’ll protect and serve, even cats.”

as a certified crazy cat lady, this line made me laugh ;)

Cat ladies aren't crazy -- they understand the need for homes for all the cats. The most we have ever had is two cats at one time.

I have five. They were all abandoned homeless kitties found either in the neighborhood or at my school that I rescued.

Providing homes for rescue kitties is so important! We tend to adopt older cats, because they generally don't get adopted. Everyone wants a kitten. Our current cat is blind in one eye, but it doesn't seem to bother him.

Awwwww, this was really sweet!

I liked that it took so long to reveal that Sarge was a dog and so were all the recruits, some of whom probably had no idea what they'd been signed up for.

Three days of tracking a new type of animal is an amazing talent-- especially across a garbage dump. Actually, the thought of finding any specific smell in a garbage dump (except 'rot') is pretty impressive.

I love the idea of the catbird-- and the picture! But what a sad end. Logical, but sad. Poor little mutant kitty!

I tried to hide Sarge's true identity as long as I could, which is something you do so extremely well. Three days of tracking (and the dump) are what got Sarge his golden nose. Yes, the ultimate end for predator/prey combinations is not fun, but the poor catbird had a long, cute life before DNA took over.

I would love to have a flying cat. K-9 units protecting cats goes against everything in their dog natures, but it's part of the job. I'm glad you liked this!
