FTSECWoody had loved the white, two-story house as soon as he’d seen it.  It was perfect.  It was bland, boring, and dull.  It was at the end of a cul-de-sac of similar houses, mostly rentals.  It had lawns, a few low shrubs, no trees, and a wood fence in decent shape ( Read more... )

You are a master at genre mashups. I love the gritty crime drama structure filled up with the whimsy of well known stories. This is a delightful twisty tale. I agree, Glinda seemed disingenuous, and I like this explanation as to why.

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I never set out to write mashups, they just wind up that way. I've always thought of all the fairy tales, myths, etc., as being in one place. Maybe because my brain can't separate them anymore so they always run into each other.

I loved the opening to this-- Woody's glee over that "perfect" house being revealed as his rejoicing in its utter dullness, because it was perfect for being ignored.

It was meagerly disguised as “Smith Bros. Painters” and bristled with antennas.
And of course the watchvan, with this marvelous detail. :D

The brewery was a neat and unexpected use for the prompt, with the hidden Secret Elevator down to the utterly pathetic headquarters of FTSEC. That IS a pretty good disguise.

And then there's the poor Wicked Witch, done in by lawn sprinklers. What a sad (and sadly hilarious) way to go. :O

“Too bad about that snitch,” she said with a smile.
This was perfect--we hate Glinda immediately for being so smarmy about getting off the hook in such a tragic and unexpected way.

I got a kick out of Woody and his one-man crime-busters mission to make things right in the fairytale world. We could use more like him!

I started with the house, and what I intended originally to do with it I don't remember, but it became a safe house for WITSEC which changed to FTSEC. I needed to work in the prompt, so I thought about using a brewery tank for an elevator. Who knows how all the rest of it came together.
