BUNKERS AND BLUEBERRY PIE

Jack was sitting at the counter inside Annie’s Restaurant when the world didn’t end, yet again.  The asteroid had missed, or God had forgiven humanity, or the mystic calculations were off just a little, or whatever the excuse was. Jack was just happy to be eating his second piece of one of the best blueberry pies he’d ( Read more... )

Ooooh, a narrow escape there! But there are definitely worse things he could have done in life. Good thing for Annie though, or he might have been in lots more trouble!

There are far worse things than selling Lifeboats, and he was lucky to have liked to eat pie as much as Annie liked to bake them. Who knew that blueberry pie was good for the soul?

Another delightfully clever take on the prompt. I really love the inventiveness of using mythological themes in a modern way.

I have always enjoyed that as well. I grew up with a heavy dose of mythologies and so the characters keep creeping out.

I loved this use of the prompt, and the creative awfulness of Jack's product and his means of increasing demand for it and then new demand for repurposing it. It's a double-win for him!

Well, from a sales standpoint. Not so much in the Karma department, though I was pleased he got what he deserved (minus a little reprieve from the kindness of Annie).

I liked how his own death was invisible to him, but readers could see in retrospect that it had happened. OR, this is a huge warning never to take a "nap" when you're feeling really lousy. ;)

Wonderful work!

Thank you! Jack was a master salesman, even though it made him a lousy human being. Instead of finding a need and filling it, he created the need by exploiting people's fears. I remembered from the way back machine that some people converted their atom bomb shelters into rec rooms. I couldn't condemn someone to Hell who loved blueberry pies that much. It is always a big risk to take a nap when you feel bad after your doctor keeps telling you that you have a bad heart.
