“Chinen!!!” a voice was heard from afar. But Chinen seems to have not heard it.
“Oi! Chinen!” his voice was getting louder and louder. Chinen paused for a while.
“Haha. I caught up with you.” Yamada tapped Chinen’s shoulder lightly. He grinned widely as Chinen looked towards him.
“What do you want, Ryosuke? I have something to do at home.”
“Eh? What will you do at home?” He tilted his head.
“Homework, of course.”
“EHH?! Seriously? Jaa, then can you help me tomorrow?” He aligned his hands and bowed his head to Chinen.
Just shortly after the request, Yamada received a smack on the head.
“I-itai yo! What was that for?” He scratched his head and looked into Chinen’s eyes with confusion.
“You said that I’m going to help you with the homework, is that right? That’s not going to happen.” He pouted.
Yamada pushed Chinen’s shoulder. “BA-KA! It’s not about the homework, you squirrel.”
“Haa? Then what?”
Yamada smiled and that’s what filled the curiosity of the younger. “I’m going to tell you about it, tomorrow. Wait for me in the classroom after class, okay?”
Chinen nodded.
The older messed his hair and ran ahead of Chinen.
He stopped running out of a sudden. “Don’t forget it, ne? Zettai ni.” He then dashed away and disappeared from Chinen’s sight.
Chinen Yuri was left with a smile.
“…I can’t wait for tomorrow to come! I wonder what Ryosuke would like to say to me.
Ahhh~ it makes me nervous…”
Chinen was lying on his bed, with continuous thoughts of what would probably happen tomorrow. He hugged his pillow tightly as he created his silly thoughts. Chinen suddenly reminisced memories that go way back in his first year high school days.
Flashback
Second day of class. It was raining hard outside but Chinen had to go home even if he has to get wet.
“Yabai! Should it really rain right now?” He complained as he stepped outside the school building. “The weather news didn’t say it would rain. Aaah~” He added.
It didn’t reach 20 steps since he set foot on the wet ground but he was dripping wet. Despite all this, he continued to walk.
A few seconds later, even though it was not raining, he did not feel any rain droplet falling on his head anymore. So he stopped.
“Ehh? But it’s still raining. Doushite?” He looked around when he saw a taller figure behind him.
“Yo! It wouldn’t be good to get wet in the rain. You might get a cold.” The older smiled at him as he let Chinen stay under his yellow umbrella.
“Umm, who are you?”
“Ah! Yamada Ryosuke desu!! Class 1-D.” Yamada bowed as he introduced his self.
“Oh, so we’re classmates. Chinen Yuri desu. Arigatou ne for sharing your umbrella with me.” He bowed in return.
“Here! A handkerchief. At least to clean your face and your hair.” Yamada handed over his hanky to Chinen.
“It’s okay if you won’t return it.”
“No! I’ll wash this and return it to you tomorrow.” He insisted.
“As I said, it’s okay. You need it more than I do.” He said as he patted Chinen’s shoulder. “Let’s go now. I’ll take you home.” Yamada grinned.
“No no no. I can walk by myself just a little further. My house is near anyways.”
“Then what’s the use of letting you share the umbrella? Let’s go. It’s fine by me.”
After 10 minutes, they finally reached Chinen’s house. It was just near their school.
“Jaa, thank you for walking all the way with me. Mata ashita.” Chinen waved his hand and bid him goodbye.
“Un! It was kind of relaxing… Walking from school to your house. Jaa ne, Chinen!” Yamada started walking going back to the school’s direction.
Chinen was hesitating to say this but he gathered his courage and said, “Take care!”
End of Flashback
"… At first I thought it was impossible…
To fall in love with someone your own gender…
People might laugh at me for how I feel.
He was just sharing his umbrella with me yet my heart has gone wild.
To think that he could just come at me that easily
I don’t know what I really feel right now…
Is this love?”
“Mou~ I can’t take it anymore!” He shouted out loud. He grabbed his phone that was placed on his side table. He went off to send a mail to Ryosuke.

Subject: I want to know!
Ne, Ryosuke, won’t you tell it to me now?
Message sent.
Just shortly, he received a reply from Ryosuke.

Eto.. It’s something I want to say in personal.
After reading his reply, Chinen’s heart stopped. His entire face was as red as a tomato. He couldn’t help but hug his phone close to his chest. And so he mailed him one more time.

Due to the excitement that filled his heart’s content, he fell into a deep sleep. He didn’t notice that Ryosuke replied to him.

Re: (no subject)
Oyasumi !!! (^_^)/(-_-)zzz
The next morning Chinen, as usual, woke up late. But not late for school. He was very confident that he won’t be late because his school is just walking distance from his home. When he arrived in school, he saw Yamada dashing towards the school gate. The moment he saw Chinen, he ran towards him.
“Ohayou, Chinen!” He patted Chinen’s shoulder.
“Bikkurishita! It was just you, Ryosuke… Ohayou.” Chinen smiled realizing that they were walking side by side. “Ne, are you going to tell it to me right now?”
"I told you… After class, I’ll tell it to you.” He shoved Chinen’s hair. Chinen pouted upon hearing this but smiled again.
They entered their classroom and classes began.
“I can’t stop thinking what Ryosuke wants to tell me today…
All I ever think is the possibility of a confession
Aaa~ let’s put our concentration into the class, Yuuri!!!
Let’s think about love later.”
The time finally came. Everyone was leaving the classroom and some were still chatting with their friends. But Chinen was just sitting in his place watching the scenery outside while waiting for Yamada to finally come. He was starting to get nervous for some reason. “Relax, Yuri. Maybe he’s making jokes like he always does,” he whispered to himself. But it made him more nervous than ever.
Yamada came into the room enthusiastically. Seconds later, he quieted down and looked outside the window like he’s checking onto something. He quickly diverted his view to Chinen and went near him.
“Ne, Chinen tte sa, I want to confess to you something I’ve been hiding not long ago.”
“HE SAID CONFESS!”
“Please don’t be shocked at what I’m going to say, okay?”
Chinen nodded. “Unn! I promise.”
“Eto… How should I say this… I’ve liked this girl since the start of our second year.”
“So he liked ‘this girl’ for a few months already?
Lucky person. I wish it was me…”
“And who is this ‘girl’?”
“Eto… Ano….” Yamada looked down and played with his fingers. Chinen tilted his head. “S-Shida Mirai…”
“Ehh?! You mean the Shida Mirai of our class? Hohoho, you’ve got good taste ne, Ryo----“ Yamada quickly covered Chinen’s mouth to shut up.
“Let’s quiet down, ne?” He released his hand from Chinen’s mouth and allowed themselves to sit facing each other.
“How can I quiet down, Ryosuke?
Even though I knew from the start that it’s impossible to have such feelings,
Even though love was meant for the other,
I found the love in you.”
Deep down, Chinen was crying his heart out loud but he forced a smile onto his beautiful face. “Chotto matte, this is a joke, right?” Chinen laughed out loud to let out his emotions. “Good one ne, Ryosuke?” He clapped his hands like a seal, more like a baka.
But Yamada’s face was serious. He looked straight into Chinen’s eyes with seriousness. “This isn’t a joke.”
The younger gulped in fear. It was probably his first time seeing him this serious. “S-souka… Jaa, what do you want to h-help me with?” Chinen avoided Yamada’s face.
Yamada seemed to notice this so he went loose. “O-oi, by any chance, are you scared of me?”
Without a second thought, Chinen nodded.
“Daijoubu daijoubu! I won’t bite. Don’t be scared, okay?” He smiled widely. Seeing Yamada smile makes the younger feel relieved. It’s the smile that makes him want to go to school every day. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity ne. Can you help me connect Shida-san to me?”
“H-HAAA? What do you mean?”
“You will be our bridge. Simple as that.”
“Simple? It’s not simple, Ryosuke. You’re friendlier than me so this should be a piece of cake for you, right?”
“Listen Chinen. If I do the flirt without befriending her, she would think I really am a flirt!”
“You are.”
“Urusai yo! I’m not!” He stared at Chinen. “Anyways, for a week you will be friends with Shida-san. Then I’ll casually just befriend her and you do the ‘bridge work’.”
Chinen rolled his eyes. “Ugh, fine. And I thought it was anything important.”
“It’s important to me.” He stood up. “Arigatou ne, Chinen, for being there for me.” He smiled again.
No matter how angry he is supposed to be at Yamada, when he smiles, his anger fades away like a bubble. Chinen stood up and smiled at him. “It’s always okay if it’s Ryosuke. Even though I don’t like it.”
“Again, arigatou ne. Kore kara mou yoroshiku!” Yamada bowed.
The next week, like Yamada said, Chinen befriended Shida Mirai of their class. He dislikes her a bit because of his Ryosuke having feelings for her. But he tried to ignore it for Ryosuke. When Chinen was ‘successful’ at Stage 1: Befriending, he then introduced to her his best friend. And everything went smoothly.
Every lunch, the three of them would be together in one table. Yamada would sit next to Shida and Chinen would sit right next to Yamada. But unlike the old times, Yamada distanced himself a bit from Chinen so that he could create “lovey-dovey moments” with Shida. Of course, Chinen was disheartened because of it. It pains him to see Yamada and Shida talking and laughing and cracking at jokes. Before, it was Yamada and him who did those stuffs. Now, it seems that he has disappeared from their sight.
“What’s this Yuuri? Why the sad face? Smile! SMILE!!! For Ryosuke.”
This is how Chinen convinces himself to continue playing the role-playing game.
So far, Shida has not sensed anything weird coming from Yamada. She looked at Chinen and Yamada as friends. And she’s happy just the way things are.
One Friday late afternoon, Yamada Ryosuke has finally decided to confess his love to Shida. So he invited Shida to go home together. He didn’t tell Chinen about it because he might get in the way of the confession.
Meanwhile, the young lad was searching for his best friend around the campus. He searched for him in the locker room… the gymnasium… and in their classroom… He was nowhere to be found.
He gave up the search and looked at the scenery from their hallway windows. Students of different years one-by-one, some in groups, and even in pairs went home. Near the gate, awaits a boy who seems to be waiting for someone. Seconds later, a girl with black hair called out to her. “Yamada-kun!”
As soon as he heard the name, his eyes widened. He stepped back and decided to run after them.
“…Ryosuke, before you confess to Mirai-chan...
I want to let you know…
How I feel for you all these years that we’ve been together…
I want to let you know…
HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU…”
He was already at the lobby area when he watched the two of them happily talking to each other. He wanted to look away because it hurts so much it stabbed his heart. But then he saw Yamada’s hand at his back, with his fingers crossed. Seeing such things, his heart was feeling heavy. So heavy that he wanted to say those words out loud. But he has to find the right time to tell Ryosuke.
And so, he decided to follow them all the way to the train station. While chasing after them, he listened to everything they said.
“Ne, today’s Math assignment is going to be so hard!!!” Yamada started the conversation.
“Eh? Hontou?! It’s a piece of cake for me.”
“It’s because you’re so smart.” He whispered to himself.
“What?”
“Nothing!” He denied while waving his hand back and forth in front of his face. ‘So sharp,’ he thought.
The atmosphere became dry in a few seconds…
He had nothing to think about so he had to say it in a different manner.
“Ne, there’s this person that I have liked for some time already.” He broke the ice.
“Ehh? Hontou ni?! For Yamada Ryosuke to have someone he likes, that girl must be so lucky.” Shida looked at the sky. “Who is she?” She diverted her eyes to him.
“She’s… uhh… a friend.”
“Mmm… so, what about her?”
“How should I say this…?” Yamada looked everywhere. “She’s very cute and smart. She’s very cool because when she talks, she says what she really feels. This girl has a very strong and positive personality.”
Shida remained silent.
“Ah! Demo… I think I don’t have a chance on her.” He pouted.
“Why do you say that? You’re very handsome, ne? It’s impossible for girls to not like you.” She pinched his chubby cheeks.
“Uhh… she likes guys who are gentle and not overly-stubborn. So it’s impossible.” He caressed his cheeks softly then averted his view to the dark sky.
“Ehhhhh…” Shida nodded. “Jaa, are you going to change into the type of the person she likes?”
He looked at her. “No no no… I’m kind of fine the way I am right now.”
“Deshou? Ah! Thanks for walking me until here.” They arrived at the train station.
Before the train arrives, the words he has kept on thinking about, he wants to say it now.
“tte sa, the girl that I’ve been talking about…”
“It’s me, right?” She cut his words.
Shocked at her words, he was speechless.
“Actually, Yamada-kun, I know myself. But nobody said that I was cute or that I have a strong personality.” Shida looked gently straight into his eyes. “Arigatou ne.”
Yamada could only scratch his head in shyness.
The train finally arrived and Shida is about to leave. His heart has gone wild.
Meanwhile, Chinen, who followed every step and heard every sound, hid among the crowd. He had a bad feeling of what is about to happen and he wants to stop it. But his heart said to stop.
Before Shida could step foot on the train, Yamada grabbed her by the hand and hugged her tight. “Shida Mirai, I like you!”
She said nothing but a smile.
It was finally time for the train to go. Shida hurriedly stepped inside the train and waved Yamada goodbye.
The crowd was no more and Yamada decided to go back. He suddenly stopped when he saw Chinen standing just a few meters from him.
“Ehh, you were following us?”
The younger one nodded. “And heard everything.” He looked at the ground.
The newly-confessed Yamada scratch his hair in embarrassment. “S-souka.”
“O-omedetou!”
“Sankyuu.” He smiled. The younger couldn’t take it so he averted his gaze away from him. “Chinen? What happened?”
“It’s nothing.” He massaged his cheeks so that he won’t feel anything. “So… was it successful? The confession.” He walked towards Yamada.
“Hmm, Mirai-chan didn’t release me from the hug so I guess it was a success!” He beamed his smiled again.
“H-hug?”
“Sou sou. I thought you saw everything?”
“……”
“Chinen?”
“The hug. I knew it would happen. So I didn’t look because I would be hurting myself.” He avoided the older’s dear eyes.
“Why would you be hurt? Are you okay?” He put his hands on his shoulders.
“I’m fine.” His tears are starting to burst.
“Fine? Then why are you crying?”
“….because….”
“Because?”
“Because I LOVE YOU!” He screamed with all his might.
Yamada was speechless.
“Since when?” He asked. “Since when did you start to like me?”
“W-when you shared with me your yellow umbrella on the second day of our first year. I thought this was just some crazy heartbeat. But….”
“But?”
“But the smile on your face… It was the only inspiration I had to enjoy my high school life. The only reason I could go to school…” The poor Chinen continued crying.
Yamada could do nothing but give him a warm hug. The younger one buried himself in the chest of his unrequited love. He knew this wasn’t right so he released himself from the hug that he always wanted.
“I am very happy for the both of you. I really am.” He stepped back and ran away. To a place where he could cry his heart out.
You can't stop your feelings toward someone just like how you can never stop the wind from blowing. The wind may be warm; it could calm your heart. It may be cold; it could freeze your time. But accept it, breathe it in.
