If I'm not mistaken, this is the sound of one of the classic and common symptoms of post-breakup grief: the all-or-nothing stage. All of the opposite sex are the same, I'll never love again, etc. When I went through my divorce and blurted some variation of this out, once, someone kind said to me "you know that isn't true."
Since you're a scientist, I'll add two reasons why we can know empirically that it isn't true: 1) people are demonstrably different from one another. And thank dog for that. Your girlfriend is no more the same as every other woman than you are identical to every other guy. 2) people change, as we've already discussed. Even if the problem is you, it's still not an "always, ever" kind of a situation.
So there is no curse. You will meet different people and you will be different people. It just really sucks, some of the times, along the way.
Daphnep said it perfectly. And to be honest, you're writing about the break-up without any blaming and with a lot of soul searching. To me that's the mark of a true gentleman. You're top shelf material. Don't forget it :)
