Awwww, this really makes me nostalgic for hanging around the train yards with my grandfather (he was an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad) when I was a kid.
Grandpa worked as an engineer from the 1940s through his retirement in the late 70s. He still tells lots of stories and can still fix or drive virtually anything.
Interesting fact: he says all those movies where you see guys climbing over the cars from the front of the train to the back are bunk. You just swing off from a bar on the side of a car, wait around for whatever car you want to approach, and grab onto a nearby swing bar to hop back aboard.
I am enthralled with this story. You just brightened my day.
Well, maybe not "brightened" as that would probably mean an increase in the temperature, which nobody likes, me least of all. But you made my day happier, that's for sure.

Perhaps a railroad car converted to a diner? The broken window gives the the impression of a weblike plant growth inside the window. I haven't even thought about the "reflections". That's what days off are for.

It was a decommissioned, decaying commuter train. Very old. Not like any of the ones that run today.
Out-of-service transports are enthralling: trains, planes, buses, etc. More than many other objects, they are full of stories and ghosts of experience.

How long did your grandfather work as an engineer? Did he tell lots of stories? I bet it's a fascinating life.

I like your "weblike plant growth" insight.
