I thought I was OK being a mother of a soldier, but apparently I'm really not. At least not OK being the mother of a deployed soldier. You don't want to get her anything that will block all sound. They have to hear the sirens to get to the sheltered areas during direct mortar fire. I don't say that to frighten you. My husband is a soldier. This is just what they do and what they know. Soldiers are rarely hurt by mortar fire - it's loud and they know where it's going to hit and the people shooting them have notoriously bad aim. Husband always said they'd just sit together in the shelter with their flack gear on and lean their helmets together to hold each others heads up and take a nap ( ... )
