I had to turn in four kids over a two week period for this sort of plagiarism -- turning in someone else's work as if it were their own. Two were on the same day in different classes.
It always ruins my day.
And I'm always surprised when they (at first) look me in the eye and calmly deny the act, adding lie upon lie. Why? Why am I surprised that plagiarizers will lie face-to-face?
Thankfully, I do not have to confront them about it. I hope that they have the guts to admit to it and submit to the professor's punishment.
As to why it ruins your day.. that is because you trust your students to do their work... that is a fundamental part of education. When the trust is violated then the goal of education of the individual has failed. Plus we become their mentors, and somehow we subconsciously believe that what they do reflects on how we mentored them. I guess educators get a glimpse of what it must have felt like to God when Eve took that fruit (although one could argue he knew it was coming) then again given enough time even against all hopes, we will find another and then another... "those humans never learn from eachother... they have to make the mistakes for themselves." ::bolt of lightning comes striking down::
