I Passed

Aug 12, 2008 21:21

My Comps that is. That means I now have an official plan to get a PhD :-) oh yeah and a pay raise :-) Now I just need to push out a couple more papers in the next 9 months and then life will be on cruise control. Oh wait then I have to find a job and then think about having baby(ies).

Glad you re-thought that "cruise control" scenario. We still haven't hit that point -- not sure it comes before one assumes room temperature...

Congrats on the comps! When we took ours, the professors passed around baskets of hard candies to keep up our focus levels.

We had an Admission to candidacy exam at the end of my 1st semester of Grad school that was the nerve wrecker. My comps were more of a meeting to propose what will do for research that is worthy of their money and a PhD with my committee. I got to a point last friday where I was done. I had polished the written proposal and the presentation as much as I was going to. Monday was spent doing work that was not related to the proposal and 2 hrs on Tuesday was spent reading my submitted paper, the proposal, and the presentation, and some lit directly related to what I was proposing, just to get me warmed up. Then at 9:30 I went upstairs prepared the conference room, setting up the video conferencing equipment. At 10:00 I gave the presentation that lasted ~55 min with questions. They then dismissed me. By 11:00 they had called me back into the conference room and informed me that I passed. I tend to get to a point where studying is no longer beneficial. My attitude becomes "either I am going to do extremely well or I am going to fail ( ... )

Is it wrong for me to post saying congratulations on your pay raise? Anywho, I love you and I'm so very proud of you. And glad to know you are still excited about life post-PhD with me!

See I knew it was all about the money :-). No really the extra $0.02 a pay check will be nice. I am ready to get this part of my life over with so that we can begin a new chapter together, where going to school is no longer my job.

seconded. i mean, not to intrude on your togetherness, but i am so ready for school to be over. (now to work on the someone with whom to form a "together" part.... except that trying never works in that department of life. hmph.)

hey--i propose a SG1: COntinuum watching party Friday evening, either at House of Chez Casa or at Place-Rayman. Are you free? If we convene a not-exactly-frak-party (Gatewatching party?) at your place, could you get the screen? Also, I have an anniversary thing for you plural.

Confabulations!

If you need any tips on the baby havingness... I guess you should ask someone else. We don't seem to have been very successful.

Yeah that may be the case, but as far as being a team that we would like to emulate you are pretty high on that list. Also you have adopted an awful lot of 20 something children :-)

If I *had* a pretty head, y'all would be turning it. Given the head that I *do* have, I imagine the effect is more like Linda Blair in the Exorcist. But blushing.
