This is my first fanfic which I started earlier this year. I'm hoping cross posting it here will stimulate my desire to get back to writing it. I apologize for the boring layout, I'm still confused by LJ.
Title: A Game of Masks
Pairings: Super Junior Members + OCs
Rating: PG-13 for violence
Notes: Character death, Medieval/Fantasy AU, occasional crack
Summary: Magic, intrigue and secrets abound in and around the king's court. While everyone has something to hide, some have more than others. Who has the biggest secret and will it end up tearing the kingdom apart?
Prologue
"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages." - William Shakespeare
"How well can a man truly know himself? More importantly, how well can a person truly know another? Perhaps Mr. Shakespeare is correct and each one of us is born into this life merely to play predetermined roles. Those of a religious bent would have us believe that while we are ultimately preordained by some almighty deity we do have free will to live life as we see fit. Whether it is for pleasure, pain, passion or piety - it's our decision to make. Whether the writer or the orthodoxy is correct, they both share a common sentiment - change. People change, either by design or default. If humans are in a constant state of flux it stands to reason that if a person could intimately know another, that state would change in the next heartbeat as they both move, even infinitesimally, towards their next role or stage in life. Supposing that is true, what then in life is constant? One wise fellow once remarked that nothing in life is certain except for death and taxes. That statement is undoubtedly true; however, what about those treasures authors, poets and musicians endlessly pen the praises of? Love, family, friendship; are these things as unshakable as the songs and writings lead us to believe? Or are they just as shifting as the grains of sand across the desert or as flowing as the evening tide upon the beach? For someone who believes wholeheartedly in the permanency of these three ideals, what would it take to shatter his belief? What incentive or situation could cause such a person to turn their back on their loved ones, their monarch and perhaps even their conscience?"
All these thoughts quickly ran through his head as he waited before the massive doors, hidden behind a facade of calm. Moments later, the doors opened and he slowly stepped forward to meet his future.
