The Poor You Will Always Have With You

I have heard many strange interpretations of “The poor you will always have with you,” as it is commonly translated from Matthew and Mark, or John's version in today's Gospel reading: “You always have the poor with you.”

Does Jesus mean that we should not give to the poor? Does Jesus mean that we should not advocate for justice for the poor? Is ( Read more... )

I think the ten commandments are far too easy. It's struggling with questions like what to do about the poor that make people valuable to the world. Jesus was good at posing these questions.
