As a kid, I used to go camping in the Adirondak mountains in New York. There were black bears everywhere. One morning while running down a trail, I found myself face to face (with about 12 feet separating us) with a black bear. I was 9 at the time, and I'd never seen a bear up close before. To my eternal credit, I didn't wet myself, but I did run back to my campsite screaming bloody murder.
I always bring firecrackers if I think there are going to be bears around. While walking through Yosemite, I brought along a boat horn and a can of bear repellent spray (pepper-spray in a fire extinguisher-sized canister).
