Max wants to dive into programming. Any suggestions on where he should start? Is BASIC too... well, basic, these days? He has been using Scratch for almost two years now, but mostly for simple animations and little movies. Should I help him find more complicated tutorials to move forward in that direction? Help me, nerd-friends. You're my only hope

Oh, and he might enjoy Flash. It's not straight-up programming, but I think it would be something fun for him to play with and allow him to segue into something a little more abstract. Downside is that it's not free, compared to most of the others that were mentioned, but the upside is that it's graphical, you have immediate feedback, it has a huge support base, and I'd be he has seen real-world examples of it all the time on the web, thus exciting his imagination.
