Most of the vets I've used have given me an estimate broken down into what has to be done and what they'd like to see done. Perhaps you can ask them to give you the paperwork like that.

Thanks, the thing is I did a lot of shopping around prior to going here - but now...ahhhh! More work on my part - arg - why can't all places just be honest and upfront :(

I just with I could bring them to our family farm vet - he is what I'm used to. I guess I just don't like the assumption made that we'll go ahead with every recommendation, and when we opt out of something to get the sob story. Growing up on a farm we looked after our dogs mostly ourselves and they all lived healthy and long lives.

I did call our vet today and expressed my concerns. We have been assigned a new vet, the owner of the place btw, and he said this was brought to his attention before. When I said I grew up on a farm and used to dealing with animals etc. his tone did a 180 change...haha

Thankfully we have pet insurance too. No OHIP for dogs.

Eh, I find it's symptomatic of the medical profession in general. Need to make money to pay off student debts and afford the Lexus? Overcharge your patients/send them for things they don't need so you get a cut and hope they don't notice.

OMG don't even get me started with vets! I have a post I wrote on a vet visit a long while back.

A lot depends on the vet, after my experience I would recommend calling around, asking a lot of questions and checking out the facilities until you find one that you are comfortable with. When I started talking to other places I found we were horribly over charged for a lot of things. One of those things was a cone for around the head. The vet charged us 70 bucks for it. When calling around I asked other places and I was told that if they were to do place something like that, it would only cost the amount of the cone...roughly 2 dollars. So yeah, hella ripped off on that.

I do think its pretty common in the industry - one hears this all the time.

I wouldnt hesitate to shop around for vets though - there are some that are far more in to your animals than just making money off them. Having said that, no vet services are cheap.
