She looked in the mirror and turned this way and that. He sat on the bed, observing her, trying to figure out what she was doing.
After a few minutes he spoke. “What are you doing exactly?”
She turned from the mirror and glared at him. “What are we going to do when I start showing?”
He stood and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “Stop worrying Noelle. You worked overtime and were planning on taking time off to study anyway.”
She searched his face. “But what if it happens again?”
He was confused. He pulled her onto the bed with him before responding. “What if what happens again?”
She looked at him in silence for a few minutes, emotions raging over her features. Finally, just when he was about to prod her, she whispered “miscarriage.”
His eyebrows shot up. Why would she think about something like that? “Noelle?”
“I’ve tried before” she whispered. “Last time the first pregnancy test came back negative when I was with Nash. But I had a feeling so I went out and bought two more. They both came back positive and the doctor confirmed it.
“I was careful, so careful. No one knew; I wanted to keep it a secret. I thought Sam realized when he walked in on me in the locker room but he was too busy trying to beg off the Sudbury detail to pay attention to what I was doing.
“That night, I went home and …” she trailed off.
“Noelle” Frank breathed, feeling her pain and distress. “Why didn’t you say anything?” He remembered that day. She was off for the next two days and had come back to work looking exhausted but no one dared to question her about it.
“What was I supposed to say? I didn’t want pity.” She burst into tears.
Frank pulled her close, wondering if pregnancy was going to wreak havoc on her emotions for the next couple of months.
As he held her, he began to realize why she was so afraid.
Eventually she calmed down. She rested her head on his shoulder and whispered “thank you.”
Frank kissed her forehead. “I’m here for you, always. And Noelle, statistically when a woman miscarries, there is a greater chance that her next baby will be healthy. Nothing is going to happen to the baby. Even if something does, we’ll get through it together.”
Noelle snuggled closer. She had told Traci that she had a fear of fires but if she was honest with herself, fires took second place to the fear of losing her baby. But Frank would do everything in his power to make sure that she stayed safe and carried the baby full term.
With his warm hand on her back and his heartbeat in her ear, she was gently lulled to sleep.
