A bit of Buffy fandom history

There has been interesting discussion on Buffy fandom history at rahirah's tumblr. (Ok, probably not exactly a discussion, just rahirah answering questions on how the Seeing Red disaster originally went in 2002.) Among other things she mentioned Succubus Club radioshow, where buffyverse writers were invited for interviews ( Read more... )

Ugh...
I don't like the attitude the writers have regarding Tara/Willow.

Not a good attitude at all. And I'm sorry, being a writer doesn't make it okay.

I agree - there is a place for polemic, and a place for drama but if drama has to satisfy the needs of polemic then there can be no drama.

Should there be rape on tv? There is rape in reality. But how do you satisfy polemic - the current cry is to never show rape because it glorifies the act. the problem is that never showing it makes the reality appear resolved when it isn't. Should you show the horrific nature of rape? Again - how do you show it?

Showing rape has a message.
Ignoring rape has a message.
Focusing only on attractive women and leaving out men, and children - message.

The same thing goes with any dramatic turn - death of a character, a character coming out, discovery a character is.....it's all drawn from emotions. I tend to believe that drama brings an issue closer to the heart than polemic.

But isn't rape supposed to repel - isn't it supposed to be incredibly toxic? The only show on your list that I've watched is GOT, and yes the amount of rape is horrible but if we look at the time period Martin based it on, it's also realistic. Women were chattel - in essence rape was a property crime against their fathers, and only if the woman was in a higher class. Eloping with a high born girl was rape - forcing a servant girl was just what men did ( ... )
