I definitely understand your being freaked out, but I'm not sure it's possible to completely control the pests.

Ticks are anywhere there is vegetation, you can't really be rid of them unless you pave the yard, but regular mowing will help. Just make sure he puts on some repellent whenever going out in either tall grass/weeds or wooded areas and wearing a hat helps too, keep the buggers out of the hair. All you can do is keep being vigilant and checking for them, though at 5 he's probably old enough to help by checking himself too.

Happy Birthday Little Guy. I hope the day is great. Re the ticks - when I talked to Froggy's pediatrician because I was scared because we have them in our yard he said there was basically little you could do expect be vigilant in checking. I know not encouraging

If you got the tick off of him within a few hours he should be ok. As long as he wasn't buried in you are ok. You are going to have to tick check every time he comes in though.

I worked at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park for a year. Tick Checks were just a part of working there. Send me an email (margoeve at gmail) and I'll see if I dig up all the info we had from my hard drive. We only had one person get sick and it wasn't with Lyme but with rocky mountain spotted fever.

If it did burry itself in save the tick for testing. You drop it in a small jar with rubbing alcohol and bring it to the Dr.

It happens that she thinks the cough is a sinus infection, so a ten day run of Amoxicillian will hopefully get both, just in case there is a problem. I'm just super paranoid about reinfection with Lyme because there's no objective way to tell that you've gotten it again.
