Live performance of The Sound of Music, in a national park with lawn seating (ie far from stage). The intricacies are likely to go over the head of a five year old or I'm going to be explaining about Hitler and all manner of other things I don't want to do? Specifically my five year old.

Wait. Who is five?! Surely not. You just had him a few months ago!

I didn't know that the show had a second half until I was 7 or so. To me, the movie ended with the wedding and it was time for bed. (It was a commercial break on the hour - how convenient!) When I finally did see the second half, I spent a lot of time contemplating the escape scene. I was quite concerned about how they were all going to walk over the mountains.

The Sound of Music was the very first movie I ever saw (in a theater, this was before the days of vcr's, yes I'm that old). I don't think I needed/asked anything about Hitler, it was just good guys and bad guys. But I didn't understand the ending - I didn't get they had escaped. I guess I thought they would be on the run from the bad guys forever. My mother found me crying in my room later and had to explain it. YMMV.
