Tuesday is recycling day round our way. So this morning I was out by the kerbside placing boxes of paper and plastic for collection. This is a fortnightly event which does not usually merit a livejournal posting. However this morning Londo, our three legged cat decided to use this as an escape attempt.
In the resulting confusion we ended up with Londo, Janet and I outside, the door locked and no keys on us. Janet and I were wearing dressing gowns, Londo was wearing her long fur coat and so was the warmest of us all. The nearest spare key is at my sister's house in High Wycombe which is over an hour away by car and we have no guarantee anyone would be in if we did call.
I knocked at the one neighbour who had lights on, explained the situation and asked if I could borrow a phone to call a locksmith. Being British he said yes and put the kettle on to make tea. Londo proceeded to charm George and Suzie, the children of the household, before making a break for it to explore the house.
In the meantime, Janet asked if she could borrow a coat hanger and was able to reach through our letter box and unlock the front door. Normally if we are out the door is double locked and will only open with a key but when single locked it can be opened from the inside just by turning the handle. I am glad I married a smart woman, so much cheaper than a locksmith, more fun too.
So tea was drunk, Londo was recaptured again and we went home. Hopefully having given our neighbours a good story to tell when they get to work.
I think I owe then a nice bottle of wine as a thank you.
