Half-Blood Prince

Just finished reading the book. It took me just under three and a half hours (my usual speed, 200pages/hour).

Spoilery Thoughts Regarding Fandom, Snape, and my own Fanfic )

Well, I was right when I said that "Prince" couldn't possibly be a literal prince.

But I didn't really speculate too much, something I'm inordinately proud of.

Why are you proud of not speculating? Has speculating in the past diminished your enjoyment of a previous book?

Wow, it really would be interesting if Snape turned out good. Actually, that would be AWESOME. I can't wait for the 7th book to find out!

As for your fanfic, I say who cares about trying to make it fit better with canon. Just go with whatever you had planned and say it's AU and different.

The interviews that have just been posted at the leaky caldron and mugglenest are actually making me wonder if I'm getting things wrong, somehow.... JKR hasn't shot down the theory that it was all pre-planned, but kinda sorta made it sound like it was just a good theory. But then again, there are quite a lot of theories that might explain the situation without resorting to evil!Snape, and perhaps it was just that one version of the theories that she seemed to be sort of dismissing?

Well it kind of doesn't matter if it's fanfiction though. If you want it to be preplanned, you can make it so, no matter what happens later. :) And JKR does like to play devil's advocate.

I'm not counting on JKR sticking to things in canon that would fit in and make sense. I wouldn't be surprised if anything inplausible or nonlinear happens simply because she's the author and she wants it to. If in the next book Harry and Hermione get together or Lily shows up alive I'd just roll my eyes and roll with the punches. I don't read the books for the books, I read them for the fanfiction. But I'd doubt that she'd do that. XD

...and in retrospect I think that Half-Blood Prince was an awesome name for he book. After I had read I thought about what else it could be (nothing really0 and the tie in of the book and that it'll be about Snape at the end- yeah, awesome.

It was a good name, though I think if that "Prince" thing had been pulled by an author I liked less, I wouldn't have been too impressed. From anyone else, it would've been... well, lame, really. Almost as if she chost that name so that she could get people to speculate wildly and yet be totally wrong. :) But it's JKR, so it's acceptably clever. :)
