In August 2007, I am visiting Japan for the first time. I'll be there for about three weeks, including Worldcon in Yokohama. I have accordingly resolved to finish reading Genji before I go (and read all of that history book, and listen to conversational-Japanese audio lessons, and and and . . . ). It will take me a little over a chapter a week to ( Read more... )

Sure. I mean, what's another time-sink?

Heh. All my time-sinks is why I find myself having to scurry to finish before actually going to Japan . . .

I would love to. I am sadly very behind, so I can't promise to be of much help, but I will do my best to catch up.

Hey, world's loosest reading group, after all; it's nice to have other people reading along, but the group will be here whenever.

I'm in, provided I can wrench it back from Alexander (who FINISHED it, the little Japanophile monkey.)

That is a very impressive accomplishment by Alexander. What did he think of it?

Hee. Conversation:

Hey Bubba!! Kate wants to know what you thought about Genji!

"It was very difficult to read and there was a lot I didn't understand until I looked things up. I learned a lot."

Did you like it, though? Or did the difficulty put you off?

"I liked it. It was a good story once I understood a little more about the time period."

What about Genji himself? What did you think about him?

"What a putz! I don't think there are any putzes bigger than he is!"

I will probably point him to this comm when he earns his computer privileges back, he'll probably be quite interested in the goings on here. (He has to yank up his Social Studies grade to get the computer back.)

I love it.

I hope his grades improve, both on general principles and because it would be very interesting to hear his take on things.
